  1. Calendar event Urban Lunch Talk: Serious gaming as a way of understanding the world

Welcome to a new episode of the Urban Lunch Talks series addressing the theme ‘Urban transitions in times of crises’. In this episode of the Urban Lunch Talks series, we will investigate how serious games can be a useful tool in tackling complex planning situations, to support a better understanding of the issues at stake among stakeholders, help increase the engagement for sustainable urban development and better decision making. We want to share insights from two projects funded in JPI Urban Europe and deep-dive into learnings from these projects and discussion. In what situations are games helpful, vs not so helpful? What are the key success factors and are there any hidden traps? What are the do’s and do-nots’ when setting up your own serious game? Join us for an interesting Urban Lunch Talk January 23. Register today! Speakers: Glenn Lyons, Professor at the University of the West of England, and project coordinator of the TAP for uncertain future project. Hilda Tellioglu, Associated professor at TU Wien, and main partner of the SmartHubs co-design games. Jonas Bylund, Researcher KTH Royal Institute of Technology, with a background in the JPI Urban Europe management board with a focus on research and innovation strategy, shares insights on how serious games relates to a tradition of other exploratory methods and Urban Living Labs.

  3. Calendar event DUT Scientific Consultation Workshop

The DUT Scientific Consultation Workshop: Refining the Roadmap Towards Innovative Climate-Neutral Cities takes place on 26 February 2025 as part of a three-day UERA conference on Research Alliances for Climate-Neutral, Sustainable, and Equitable Urban Communities. The conference runs from 26 to 28 February 2025. It serves as a platform for bringing together a wide range of experts from academia, government agencies, industry, and civil society to strategize on how collaborative research can drive impactful, actionable solutions that benefit urban centres, promoting a more just, inclusive, and sustainable future for all. In the Consultation Workshop, DUT provides the opportunity for urban research and innovation experts to critically reflect on and challenge the strategic development of the DUT Roadmap for the next years. Discussions will encompass thematic aspects, such as the DUT multi-annual call agenda, and process issues, such as ideas for future funding calls and program setup towards transformative innovation. The DUT team will present the state of roadmap development and run several interactive sessions, in order to achieve tangible recommendations. There will not be a call for papers. A detailed agenda will be closer towards the conference. Participation in the workshop is possible both online and on-site in Rome. If you want to participate in the conference on-site sign up here. 5. Article Multi-scale analysis of accessibility by proximity, an application in the North African urban context with the Rabat-Salé conurbation in Morocco

In this initial study, which is part of a wider doctoral research project on accessibility-based planning, we set out to measure accessibility scores for a range of POIs (shops, services, green spaces and leisure facilities) in the Rabat-Salé conurbation in Morocco. The concepts of “15-min city” and proximity-centred accessibility are still relatively unexplored in the context of Moroccan cities, and more broadly in that of North African cities (Büttner et al., 2022). In many respects, urban planning in the Rabat-Salé conurbation is representative of the main cities in this geographical area: combating heat islands, managing dense informal housing, developing new towns on the outskirts, balancing the distribution of urban facilities in a context of strong urban and demographic growth, improving public transport infrastructures and promoting active modes of travel.

  7. Calendar event Key Areas of the 15-minute City Pathway of DUT

DUT invites European researchers, experts and local practitioners to discuss and co-create on challenges and key topics for the urban mobility transition. This highly interactive online workshop is a central step to reflecting and updating the DUT strategic document, the DUT Roadmap. In this context, the 15-minute City Pathway – one of the three thematic areas of DUT – updates its approach to transforming mobility in liveable, inclusive and climate-neutral cites. Here, we tackle challenges connected to urban mobility by implementing research and innovation perspectives crossing sectors and linking stakeholders. Discussion questions What are the most important aspects / most urgent challenges for urban mobility transitions? In which areas can research and innovation move most? Where should we set priorities and focus areas in the upcoming years? Key Areas of the 15-minute City Pathway of DUT The DUT team welcomes all interested target groups of DUT to discuss and rethink Key Areas of Action as focus topics for the work of the 15-minute City Pathway. Feel welcome to review and find further information on the key areas in an overview and a more detailed narrative ahead of the event. We plan to discuss with 30-40 participants and will give our best to arrange the group based on diversity of thematic and geographical backgrounds. In order to do so, we would like to ask you a few question in the registration. Register here
